A recent survey revealed that the average UK mother packs over 100 hours of work, household duties and childcare into her week – which equates to 14.25 hours every day, seven days a week! Two thirds of British mothers surveyed stated that they have little or no time to themselves; 90% said that ‘me time’ is important for their emotional wellbeing and to re-charge batteries; however 60% do not factor ‘me time’ into their daily lives.
With Mother’s Day fast approaching (14 March) it might be timely to say thank you to our mums with a little pampering. However, while it might seem like a great idea to help her de-stress and feel rejuvenated with vouchers for a spa treatment or for a massage, not every mother has the flexibility or hours in the day to take time off. So it may be more effective to really show your appreciation by letting her treat herself to a luxurious facial everyday of the year.
Thanks to a new skincare innovation she can do just that: have a professional facial experience but with at-home convenience. Clarisonic® is the first sonic skincare cleansing device which harnesses micro-massage technology to clean the face just like a powered toothbrush. Indeed it was developed by the original inventors of the Sonicare2 toothbrush, which uses sonic technology to clean the teeth. It is already well accepted amongst leading dermatologists and spas, who recommend it for the daily cleansing of skin; however until recently the device has not been available to the home user.
The experience of using Clarisonic is like having a spa facial, offering a deep, penetrating clean that really opens up the pores. Yet it is child’s play to use - just as you would with a toothbrush, you simply apply any non-abrasive facial cleanser to the brush head and switch on. The brush head oscillates 300 times a second, giving the face a deep but gentle massage, working with the skin’s natural elasticity to draw dirt and impurities out, unclogging the pores without harsh abrasion. In fact clinical studies have shown Clarisonic is twice as effective at removing dirt and six times better at removing make-up than manual cleansing.
A huge plus for time-starved mothers is the fact Clarisonic is as quick as it is easy to use. It takes just a minute to fully massage and cleanse the face, or three minutes for the body, adding no time to the beauty ritual and because it is waterproof it can be safely used whilst in the bath and shower. It also takes away the guesswork – an electronic timer beeps to indicate when you should clean the next part of the face or body to make sure each area receives equally effective attention.
Clarisonic has been proven safe for virtually all skin types and is even recommended by dermatologists for women with chronic conditions and sensitive skin. Its gentle sonic micro-massage action cleans so thoroughly that it also prepares the skin to absorb skin care products easier, improving their effectiveness. Restoring and maintaining moisture on the face is vital for anti-ageing and it has been proven that skincare product absorption rate increases by 61% after cleansing with Clarisonic compared with manual cleansing. As a result, the Clarisonic will ensure that your mum’s skin always looks healthy and glowing, allowing the skin to experience the full benefits of serums and moisturisers. Indeed Clarisonic is even proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles when used in conjunction with anti-ageing products.
As a result Clarisonic is popular amongst celebrity mothers including Courtney Cox, Demi Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker, to name but three, who all share a common goal to remain looking as beautiful as possible in the spotlight despite having to juggle work and childcare commitments.
The Clarisonic Skin Care System could be the perfect Mother’s Day gift. It even comes fully charged and with four free serums, so that she can start using it straightaway. It is available at SpaceNK stores nationwide. The Classic skincare brush for the face costs £150 whilst the Plus model for the face and body costs £175.

The vintage scene has returned! Legendary Queen VB (who you may remember my first encounter with earlier, as she is also known as the Physic Bag Lady) is the name that is hypnotising London town yet again! But this time it’s down to her other mesmerising tool, in the shape of her eloquent vintage handbag range that can be seen on the arms of many famous folk too!

HN (that’s Harvey Nichols to you) is the store to be at right now - Bullis’s bags have lit up the halls like a Christmas tree with the Knightsbridge set all flocking to grab a bag. My prediction is that these are set to sell out fast! Aren’t I lucky to have reserved my VB adornment well in advance and just in time for Christmas too!
Victoria explains, "Retro is timeless. It never goes out of style. In fact all the major designers are basing their handbags on styles from the 1920’s through the 1970’s. This season for example, some designers have added a hand-strap at the back of clutches; this style was widely used during the 1920’s into the 1940’s.
Unlike the mass-produced handbags seen everywhere today, the handbags of yesteryear are high quality pieces made individually by hand in Europe or the United States. Each bag has a story to tell about the time period from which it hails, the long-gone designer who artfully crafted it and the stylish woman who once carried it. If I find a handbag that still has a coin, a handkerchief or a mirror in it, I leave it in to honour the original owner.”
If I could step back in-time I would want to walk in the days of the 1920’s – I can imagine myself as a ‘flapper’ and I bet that my arm candy would have been an equal match to one of lady Victoria’s collection – Or perhaps it would have been the ‘Great Gatsby’ himself?!
Whatever your occasion is make sure that your handbag is a match! The two most popular type of retro bags these days are the beaded and metal mesh examples as currently shown at Harvey Nichols, and day bags from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. The Victoria Bullis Collection can be found in the International Handbag Room on the ground floor at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge in London.
