The vintage scene has returned! Legendary Queen VB (who you may remember my first encounter with earlier, as she is also known as the Physic Bag Lady) is the name that is hypnotising London town yet again! But this time it’s down to her other mesmerising tool, in the shape of her eloquent vintage handbag range that can be seen on the arms of many famous folk too!

HN (that’s Harvey Nichols to you) is the store to be at right now - Bullis’s bags have lit up the halls like a Christmas tree with the Knightsbridge set all flocking to grab a bag. My prediction is that these are set to sell out fast! Aren’t I lucky to have reserved my VB adornment well in advance and just in time for Christmas too!
Victoria explains, "Retro is timeless. It never goes out of style. In fact all the major designers are basing their handbags on styles from the 1920’s through the 1970’s. This season for example, some designers have added a hand-strap at the back of clutches; this style was widely used during the 1920’s into the 1940’s.
Unlike the mass-produced handbags seen everywhere today, the handbags of yesteryear are high quality pieces made individually by hand in Europe or the United States. Each bag has a story to tell about the time period from which it hails, the long-gone designer who artfully crafted it and the stylish woman who once carried it. If I find a handbag that still has a coin, a handkerchief or a mirror in it, I leave it in to honour the original owner.”
If I could step back in-time I would want to walk in the days of the 1920’s – I can imagine myself as a ‘flapper’ and I bet that my arm candy would have been an equal match to one of lady Victoria’s collection – Or perhaps it would have been the ‘Great Gatsby’ himself?!
Whatever your occasion is make sure that your handbag is a match! The two most popular type of retro bags these days are the beaded and metal mesh examples as currently shown at Harvey Nichols, and day bags from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. The Victoria Bullis Collection can be found in the International Handbag Room on the ground floor at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge in London.
